Its been just about a year since Shea Stadium entered the final stages of demolition. The photo above is from February 7, 2009. By this point, only about 1/3 of the "horseshoe" was still standing with nearly all of the concrete seating plank demolished. Basically all that was left was the structural steel.

It was definitely an interesting time. was churning incredible traffic numbers which caused the site to completely shut down for days at a time due to fans looking to see the latest phases of demolition. We were getting linked to and mentioned all over the press including the NY Times and Daily News. Pretty amazing for a little site that I run by myself.

Anyway, that was a year ago. Just 14 days until Spring Training and 2 months to Opening Day 2010!!

  1. It was incredibly sad to watch Shea demolished bit by bit on your website, but it was very informative. Since I am rarely in Queens on a non-game day, I never got to see the demolition in person and I probably would have cried anyway. It was amazing to see how quickly the thing came down. I'm glad that I at least bought my two seats from Shea!

  2. Agreed. It was definitely a bizarre thing to witness. Unfortunately Yankee Stadium is too inconvenient to visit on a regular basis or I'd try to have similar coverage.
